US wireless data usage exceeded 100 trillion MB in 2023

The U.S. surpassed 100 trillion megabytes of wireless data usage in 2023, marking a 36% year-over-year increase. According to CTIA, the wireless industry association representing major carriers, this surge was fueled by the expanding adoption of 5G devices, adding 26 trillion megabytes to the total data consumption compared to 2022. The number of wireless connections climbed to 558 million in 2023, a 6% growth. The escalating demand for spectrum can be attributed to the increasing wireless applications in sectors like drones, autonomous vehicles, and precision agriculture. While voice calls saw a slight decline to 2.4 trillion minutes in 2023, text messages remained steady at 2.1 trillion.
