There is a shortage of games for video game consoles sold in China

Despite Sony’s introduction of the PS4 in 2015 and PS5 in 2021, and Nintendo’s partnership with Tencent to launch the Switch in China in 2019, the gaming console market in China has faced significant hurdles. Stringent regulations imposed by the Chinese government have limited the availability of games. Data reveals that only about 30 imported and 20 domestically developed games have been approved for the Switch, while the PS5 has an even smaller library. This starkly contrasts with the thousands of games available in other regions. Even the iconic “The Legend of Zelda” has been banned due to content deemed inappropriate, such as the depiction of skeletons. The restrictive content guidelines have hindered the growth of the gaming console market in China.
