Steam Market Analysis: Horror and Survival Horror Games Dominate, with First-Month Sales Being a Key Indicator of Success

Despite a perceived downturn in AAA game releases in 2024, Steam has continued to thrive, with smaller indie titles like Palus, Last Epoch, and Manor Lords surprising players and critics alike.

Steam has seen a surge in new game releases in 2024, with 8,362 games launched by July 12th. This represents a 27% increase compared to the same period in 2023. If this trend persists, Steam could see as many as 17,598 new games released by the end of the year.

Co-op games continue to be a major force on Steam, representing 21% of this year’s “popular” releases. With over 51 co-op games surpassing 1,000 reviews, this trend echoes last year’s findings where co-op games accounted for a substantial 36% of total sales.

Horror games have made a significant impact on Steam this year. With 20 horror games reaching the “popular” category in the first half alone, this genre has surpassed the total of 28 for all of 2023.
