Meta’s data centers used a massive 14.975 GWh of electricity in the past year

Meta’s data centers consumed a record 14,975,435 MWh of electricity in 2023, representing a 34% increase from the previous year. Of this total, leased data center facilities accounted for 2,187,020 MWh, a 97% year-over-year increase. Among Meta’s 16 owned data center facilities, the Prineville, Oregon campus had the highest electricity consumption at 1,375,321 MWh, followed by Altoona, Iowa (1,243,306 MWh) and Sarpy, Nebraska (1,148,091 MWh). Water consumption at the data centers reached 3,881 megaliters, a 7% increase. Groundwater extraction increased by 137% to 88 megaliters. Meta stated that its newest data centers under construction are optimized with AI and will employ dry cooling technology.
