Japanese youth sue companies to reduce carbon dioxide emissions

A group of 16 young individuals, aged between 10 and 20, from Nagoya and surrounding areas in Japan, have initiated legal proceedings against ten power plants in the Nagoya District Court. The lawsuit seeks to compel these companies to significantly curtail their carbon dioxide emissions from thermal power generation to combat the adverse effects of climate change. The plaintiffs contend that as the nation’s largest emitters of CO2, the defendants have a moral and legal duty to align their operations with the Paris Agreement’s ambitious climate goals. The lawsuit highlights the severe risks posed by climate change, such as natural disasters and heatstroke, which the plaintiffs argue they are already experiencing and will continue to face in the future due to the defendants’ actions.
