Google has announced the complete shutdown of all AdSense accounts in Russia, effectively cutting off a primary revenue stream for Russian content creators. This sweeping change will impact accounts using AdSense, AdMob, and Ad Manager.
Google began imposing restrictions on Russian AdSense accounts in February 2022, following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. These restrictions gradually expanded, initially targeting content that exploited, misrepresented, or promoted the conflict. Subsequently, Google paused its ad system in Russia, prohibited new AdSense, AdMob, and Google Ad Manager account creations by Russian advertisers, and temporarily banned Russian advertisers worldwide from placing ads on Google products and services.
In retaliation, Russia seized Google’s bank accounts, forcing the closure of Google’s Russian office in May 2022. The latest move to completely shut down AdSense accounts in Russia will severely impact Russian YouTube creators, who have been a significant portion of YouTube’s user base and have earned substantial income from the platform. Russian content creators will receive their final payments later this month.
