2023 marked another year of declining birth rates in the United States

According to the latest data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the U.S. birth rate declined again between 2022 and 2023. The birth rate has been steadily decreasing for the past 17 years, with the most significant decline occurring during the Great Recession of 2007-2009. From 2007 to 2022, the U.S. birth rate dropped nearly 23%, according to the CDC. In 2023, there were 3,596,017 births registered, a decrease of approximately 2% compared to the 3,667,758 births registered in 2022. The overall fertility rate for women aged 15-44 declined nearly 3% in 2023, with 54.5 births per 1,000 women, down from 56 births per 1,000 women in 2022. The teen birth rate also declined by 4% between 2022 and 2023, with 15-19 year-old girls giving birth at a rate of 13.1 per 1,000, down from 13.6 per 1,000 in 2022.
